Change, Coaching

It’s that time of year when the days are cold and my patience is short. Are you feeling stressed too?

Stress was coined by Hans Selye in 1936 as “the response of the body to any damage for change”. So stress is your body’s way of protecting you. However, unchecked stress can become chronic. And chronic stress can have devastating effects upon your physical and mental health.

Here are some signs of stress:

  1. Headaches
  2. Body pain
  3. Frequent sickness
  4. Decreased energy and trouble sleeping
  5. Digestive problems
  6. Changes in appetite
  7. Increased blood pressure
  8. Increased heart rate
  9. Skin disorders
  10. Allergies

Here’s some tips for lowering your stress:

  1. Watch what you eat – sugar and caffeine may give you a temporary boost but they can be the cause of some of the symptoms. Eat more protein and vegetables. Drink more water. Reduce alcohol.
  2. Know what you can control and release the rest.
  3. Create a support system of friends and family if you don’t already have one. Lean on them when you need them. Support them when they need you.
  4. Get good rest – Try creating a sleep routine to help you wind down at the end of the day.
  5. Increase your exercise – Find what you enjoy doing and move more every day.
  6. Take a power nap instead of reaching for coffee.
  7. Plan for a balanced life – Ensure you work, exercise, relax and connect with your support system often.
  8. Be gentle with yourself – Allow for slipups and reward yourself for your progress.

Best of luck in managing your stress!
