Does life planning seem unnecessary to you? Do you feel like making plans is a waste of time?
When things around us are uncertain life planning may seem fruitless. But I believe that we need to plant seeds for our future or else we’ll never even get close to it.
If you want to make a bigger difference in the world, make a larger impact at work or develop meaningful, fulfilling relationships – then start planting those seeds now!
Life planning gives you control over your life. You determine your own priorities and choices instead of leaving things up to chance. And once you start life planning you’ll develop and sense of purpose and energy for achieving your dreams.
I don’t want you to dream your life away – thinking about what life can be like – you know, huge raises, large kudos, rainbows and unicorns. I want you to have a specific picture of what your life could be like and then create realistic and flexible plans for reaching that picture.
Let’s talk about plans.
First, realistic. You’ve got to take into account what’s happening in the world around you. We live in uncertain times, but you can at least be aware of what could happen and be prepared. I like the quote “You can’t change the waves but you can learn how to surf.” You’ve got to look at your own strengths, weaknesses, time and budget. You may want to become an astronaut but your age and health could be strongly against that goal.
Second, flexible. Remember I talked about uncertainty. Well, you should be ready for opportunities as they come towards you. Be proactive instead of reactive. I recommend using creativity in your possible steps forward. Creative people often see the connections before the rest of the crowd.
There’s power in having a plan. Even if it changes often. It gives you concrete steps for moving forward towards your goals that just dreaming will never give you. Be as concrete as you are comfortable with. Some people might date something as “summer” while others might use “by July 15.” As long as you are guided by your plan, then you are planting seeds with each step. Seeds that will blossom into the life your dream about – but you’ve got to plant seeds before you can enjoy the flowers.
So think about doing some life planning. It can help you find balance, solidify your priorities and face your current realities. It will help you live a life without regrets. And isn’t that what we all want?
