I work with many technical people - their expertise is "how". Because "how" is their comfort zone many jump to "how" in planning before they know "why."
Why of an organization includes:
the long term goals
the societal or stakeholder need they meet
the benefits, products & services they provide
their customers & clients
Once the "why" is clearly understood, you can plan to meet those goals and needs.
But if you aren't guided by "why" then your "how's" can waste time & resources because they aren't in alignment with the organization's goals.
"Why" will assist you in choosing the right actions, programs and projects for your organization.
A great leader keeps "why" in mind when doing the big things and the small things. Whether it's strategically planning, project planning or problem solving connect to the big reasons first - then ways to get there will come easier.
