What's your communication style?

Lead, Communicate

Your communication style is determined by two dimensions according to Walt Disney: Responsiveness and Assertiveness.

Responsiveness (sociability) is the degree to which a person expresses their emotions and enjoys interacting with others.
Assertiveness (dominance) is the degree to which a person makes their opinions known, tries to control/influence others and speaks out/makes statements.

In order to improve communication, you first must understand your own communication style, then try to determine the other's style. Temper your style so that you are closer to their preferred way of communicating.

For example, if you are low on responsiveness & want to increase, then express enthusiasm, take time for small talk & use more non-verbal communication. If you are high on responsiveness & want to lower it, then talk less, reduce your enthusiasm & make decisions based on facts.

If you are low on assertiveness & want to increase, then take a stand, initiate conversations & don't be vague or ambiguous. If you are high on assertiveness & want to decrease, then listen without interruption & ask their opinion.

By altering your communication style so that it is more in alignment with the other person's style, you will be more successful in communicating with others. Good luck!
