Janet’s discretionary time and income varied greatly month to month. She felt stress because she thought she wasn’t exercising enough in February or wasn’t giving enough to charity in March.
Through our coaching sessions, I helped Janet see the big picture in her life. She couldn’t, in the short term, alter the fact that her resources (time, money, energy) fluctuated each month. Through using The Systems Thinking Approach® she viewed things differently. She saw the big picture of her life instead of short term slices.
By utilizing percentages to allocate her monthly resources, she felt more in control of how she was spending her time, money and energy. Janet determined a percentage of her discretionary funds that she wanted to donate to charity, spend on herself, etc. She used this fixed percentage each month to determine her donation & spending amounts. She also created a set percentage that she used to allocate exercise, read and friend time each month.
At the end of the first month, Janet told me she was thrilled with the results. She said it was like looking through new lenses. Her stress levels decreased markedly! She felt like she had more control over where she was giving of herself throughout the month.
I helped Janet look at her work and life differently. Do you need to lower your stress level? Do you want to try out the Systems Thinking lenses? Let’s talk: Valerie.MacLeod@HainesCentre.com
