Four questions for inspiring the new year

Plan, Systems Thinking

Every calendar year ends, and I think it's a fantastic moment to take stock of my accomplishments and make some plans for the coming year.

A new, bright and shiny year is ahead of me. What do I want to do in the new year? What do I want to do with the future 525,600 minutes?

Here are some of the questions I use to reflect upon the past year and prepare for the year ahead:

  1. What went well: What did I achieve this year? What went splendidly? What did I succeed at? Which accomplishments am I most proud of?
  2. What went wrong: What were the main obstacles I faced? What did I learn most from these experiences?
  3. Stop doing: What should I no longer do? Which habits don't work for me? What kinds of relationships are unhealthy?
  4. Start doing: What should I begin doing? What routines and connections would I wish to establish or fortify?

Here's how I answered the questions this year:

  1. What went well: You might not typically review what went well. When we reflect on the past, most of us concentrate on the bad. But first, you start with a positive foundation by examining what worked. This year, for instance, I concentrated on expanding the Systems Thinking® Approach family. Through newsletters, online workshops, social media, and in-person training, I have generated a lot of interest in joining our group.
  2. What went wrong: I was officially diagnosed with ADHD years ago and I have allowed these tendencies to "run free" over the years. I learned that is not the most effective way to run a business so now I'm learning to work "with" not "against" my ADHD brain.
  3. Stop doing: I tend to put large expectations on myself and then find it overwhelming to start them. I will break large projects down into smaller, more specific and more easy to accomplish activities.
  4. Start doing: Exercising in the morning before I get to my office is considerable more successful than waiting later in the day. I am going to continue working out before I get stuck in emails.

By focusing on what worked, learning from your failures, breaking bad habits, and establishing new routines and relationships, these questions can assist you, your team, your company, or your family in making plans for the year ahead.

I hope you have an amazing new year that is full of opportunities, dreams, and fresh starts!
