When a new employee joins a team it takes time to get that person "up to speed" and contributing as a full team member.
However, by being aware of the Elements of Inclusion from "The Practice of Inclusion in Diverse Organizations" can help that person fully contributing considerably sooner:
Feeling safe - Physically & psychologically safe. Sharing opinions, ideas and perspectives without negative repercussions.
Involvement & engagement in the workgroup - Treated as a full participant in activities & interactions. Full access to information. Feel like an "insider." Can rely on other team members. Feeling like part of the team, if when disagreements occur.
Feeling respected & valued - Treated as they would like to be treated. Treated like a valuable & esteemed member. Trusted and cared about.
Influence on decision making - Ideas & perspectives influence what happens & decisions. Listened to.
Authenticity/bringing one's whole self to work - Truly being themselves around the group & organization. Not concealing or distorting parts of their style, identity or individual characteristics. Hold genuine conversations without hiding parts of self. Open, honest & transparent about ideas & perspectives. Making contributions in ways that feel authentic & whole.
Diversity - Diversity is recognized, attended to & honored. Fair treatment. Transparent & proud of social identity. Address differences in ways that lead to mutual learning & growth. Organization notices & values all types of diversity.
